The earnest alternative rock album, “Trench” by Twenty One Pilots is centered around depression and anxiety with powerful lyrics.

“Trench” offers a slower tempo and soothing sound with a very cohesive sound. The album contains catchy beats with lyrics that contain deeper meanings because of the messages of depression and anxiety. The songs blend alternative rock with an ukulele bridge which slows down the tune of the song making it flow better.

Twenty One Pilots released its fifth studio album, “Trench,” containing 14 tracks. “Trench” is the first studio album in three years for the band. Through the lyrics, “Trench” continues the story that their previous album, “Blurryface” started.

The band continues to sing about their experiences with anxiety, depression, and insecurities by expressing their thoughts in their lyrics. “Trench” is an allegory taking place in a fantasy dystopia produced by Tyler Joseph, the producer, which is shown through the lyrics of the songs and the music videos.

The album opens up with “Jumpsuit” which is unlike the rest of the songs in the album because of its faster melody and powerful lyrics, which provides variety to the album. It contains a high-pitched chorus with a deep bass breakdown that is more profound than the rest of the album.

“Smithereens” is a love song, which is very original for the Twenty One Pilots because they normally don’t sing about love, which shows a new, intriguing side of the band. It has a very gentle melody with pleasing lyrics. This album contains more love songs than previous albums which is engaging and refreshing.

Twenty One Pilots still incorporates rap which incorporates their old sound and songs. This album is much slower with a steadier beat compared to the last album, which had more rap songs and faster rhythms. This album still mixes some of their previous, remarkable tone by adding rap elements to the songs to keep the listeners engaged.

One opinion of fame is seen through the passionate lyrics and the intense beats of “Neon Gravestones.” The lyrics explain how media glorifies famous people after their death. It contains the most extreme look at fame and what it does to people.

The album is extremely emotional with meaningful lyrics. The lyrics uniquely convey the message of depression along side of a slower, more appealing tune. It adds more value and depth to the songs which allows the listeners to enjoy it more.

In every song, the lyrics are integrated smoothly with the beats. The beats are captivating, with strong, meaningful lyrics that engage the listener. The album addresses many problems that teens today face and are able relate to, which is different but exceptional than any of their other albums.

“Trench” was released on Oct. 5 and can be purchased on iTunes for $10.99 and streamed on Apple Music and Amazon.
