Link Crew hosted Frosty Fest on Dec. 6 in the Mustang Mall. They showed two Christmas movies in hopes to raise money for Adopt-a-Family.

Link Leaders worked the day of the event to set up the event by hanging Christmas decorations and setting up the blow-up movie screen. During the event, Link Crew showcased “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” According to Link Crew advisor Maddie Hutchinson Preston Summers took the lead, delegating responsibilities to the set up crew. They hung lights, set up the snack stand, prepared the movie screen, and more.Leaders developed a game plan together based on past events, but he and the students accomplished it all.

“Frosty Fest was a great event on campus to kick off the holiday season and bring everyone from Link Crew together.,” senior Link Leader Hailey Fiallos said. “There was lots of festive decor, holiday treats and they played two very respectable holiday movies.”

According to Hutchinson, all proceeds were donated directly to adopt a family. Link Crew has also been accepting donations and they plan to use the money to buy gifts for children who wouldn’t normally receive gifts during the holiday season.

“The goal of Link Crew is to support others on campus and help new students as they acclimate to life at Costa,” Hutchinson said.  “Supporting a family who needs some assistance during the holidays totally aligns with the ethos of our program, and it gives us a chance to come together to do something great.”

According to senior Link Crew member Rachel Moglia, every class as well as ASB participates in Adopt-A-Family each Christmas. Adopt-A-Family is an organization founded in 1990 that donates gifts to children on Skid Row. These children wouldn’t normally receive gifts if it wasn’t for  this program. Many schools along with Mira Costa participate in donating gifts.

“I always try my best to donate to any adopt-a-family that my school is involved in,” Fiallos said. “Some Link Leaders met up at Target to shop for the gifts and buy as many necessary gifts as possible.”

According to Fiallos, Adopt-a-Family is a meaningful way for Link Crew to engage with its community in a manner which can affect more than just Mira Costa. Link Crew is one of the leading organizations at Mira Costa who raises money for the school-wide Operation Happiness fundraiser.

“Adopt-a-Family is a great way to give back during the holiday season and I am so glad Link Crew is taking a huge role in it this year,” Fiallos said. “There are over 150 Link Leaders and with all our money that we raised, we were really able to buy so many children Christmas presents that wouldn’t normally receive gitfs.”

Link Crew sold hot chocolate, popcorn, pizza, and candy to raise money for their Adopt-a-Family fundraiser. To encourage more people to attend the event, Link Crew offered a discount for freshman.

“The goal of Frosty Fest, similar to Spooky Movie Night, is to offer a free, fun, accessible way for students to come together on campus,” said Hutchison said. “December is a tough month for events; there are already so many. Link Crew doesn’t aim to make money or set attendance records with what we create. What matters is that we put together events that are inclusive and equitable. There is something really cool about seeing your school at night and enjoying something as wholesome as a movie under the stars with friends. I think it’s a chance to see a place we spend so much of our time in a different way, which can be really powerful.”
