Ping-Pong rally on! Mira Costa’s Associated Student Body hosted a Ping Pong tournament from December 1st to December 6th at Fisher Gym at lunch.

To sign up for the tournament, each contestant had to enter a 5$ entree fee in order to play. Half of the money earned from the tournament went to the Richstone family center, while the other half went to ASB funding.

“I think that fun tournaments such as this one is a great way to enhance school spirit and also give back,” Hartley said. “It’s a win-win situation, as students get to show off their ping pong skills while donating to charity at the same time.”

The tournament consisted of four rounds, with 16 players. Sophomore River Benyair won the tournament after he defeated 3 players before claiming a victory against runner up senior Lena Nagy in the finals.

“It was a really fun tournament and it was well set up by ASB,” Benyair said. “Ping pong is so fun to play and it was really cool that there was a tournament here at Costa for people to showcase their skills.”

Each day of the tournament, members of ASB had to set up the ping pong tables in the gym and ensure that the gym was open. According to Sophomore ASB member Malcolm Kluth, the preparation was worth it due to the success of the tournament.

“Everyday we went to the gym and had to prepare the ping pong tables for the matches,” Kluth said. “We were glad to have the help of the PE teacher Mr.Geller as he allowed us to use his tables from his class.”

Although ASB does not have a specific date for the next ping-pong tournament, it is looking forward to get more people to sign up for it. According to Hartley, this can be done through more advertising throughout the school.

“We were really happy with the turnout of the tournament, but we are always looking to improve,” Hartley said. “I think that we need to focus on making more posters and getting the word out because I don’t think that everyone knew there was a tournament.”
