Model United Nations will compete in the annual advanced level conference on Feb. 3-4 at Huntington Beach High School.

Costa MUN advisors Wayne Knutson and Bob Timberlake selected 92 advanced level Costa delegates to attend.

“The Surf City conference is a two-day local high school conference that takes the best schools in the Los Angeles and the Orange County area,” Timberlake said. “It’s a good conference, and we need to prepare for our eastern competitions.”

The committees will debate international issues ranging from marriage to drug legalization.

“I think everyone is confident with what they’ve accomplished so far,” Model UN member senior Mackenzie Austin said. “We are prepared.”

These delegates will work for two days straight, starting Feb. 3 at 4 p.m., with registration and dinner at HBHS. The next day at 9 a.m., the delegates will continue to debate in a total of three committee sessions, which can range from one to three hours.

“We have always been good, and if we do not do really well on this then we’re in trouble,” Timberlake said.

Costa’s MUN program will debate against various schools at the Surf City Conference, such as Edison High School, Mission Viejo High School, Santa Margarita High School and many other schools along the west coast.

“The conference is one we go to every year where we run into most of our west coast rivals. Hence, it gets really competitive. I am expecting everyone to be extremely successful at the debate,” Knutson said.

This next conference is a preview for larger upcoming conferences, such as those at Georgetown, in Washington DC, and the conference at UC Berkeley.

Mira Costa MUN has been preparing for the Surf City Conference for weeks, with aspirations of doing well.

“It’s a stepping stone for others because we’re competing in Georgetown and Berkeley later in the year, so this will definitely be gearing us up for what’s to come,” Austin said.
