Associated Student Body held elections for next year’s top Student Government positions on April 20, with junior Dillon Shambaugh winning the popular vote of Student Body president for the 2012-13 school year.

To accompany Shambaugh next year on the executive board, junior Rachel Humphrey was elected vice president; sophomore Kirk La was elected as treasurer; and junior Rahje Branch was elected as secretary. Class officers for each group were also elected.

“I am really looking forward to an awesome year next year,” Senior Class President-elect junior McKenzie Becker said. “I am also looking forward to representing our senior class as a whole, and at events, and of course, at graduation as well.”

Students interested in running for ASB positions were asked to attend four different lunch information sessions, where students received the election process time line, descriptions of each ASB job, and participated in a question-answer session about the elections.

“Based on the people involved in Student Government that are trying to return as part of next year’s Student Government, I have a lot of confidence in them,” current Student Government President senior Travis Taylor said. “And even though I am leaving next year I know the school will be in good hands.”

Students had to fulfill certain prerequisites before their interviews. In order to be Student Body president, the applicants had to have been in Student Government for at least two years.

“There is a packet that needs to be filled out,” ASB Activities Director Lisa Claypoole said. “You can only receive the packet if you went to the meetings we held.”

The Student Government constitution is currently being rewritten, with plans of implementing the new one next year. Most of the revisions being planned will be new requirements for the job positions. In the current constitution, ASB members must maintain a 2.0 GPA. Next year, the minimum will be raised to 3.0.

“I am pleased with the changes we made,” Humphrey said. “I feel that it will truly make Student Government a more serious, cohesive organization. We see to it that the constitution is followed next year and is constantly being updated and referred to in order to benefit this great organization.”
