After a back-and-forth battle with Culver City, the Mira Costa boys lacrosse team lost 14-13 in the final minute on Wednesday. The boys’ overall record now stands at 6-8 and their Bay League record at 5-4.

Junior forward Jeremy Silva started off the game by scoring the first goal against Culver City. His goal was immediately answered by three goals from Culver City. Senior Chris O’Brien scored the second goal for Costa, followed by another goal by Culver City, ending the first quarter with a score of 4-2.

“We believe we can beat anyone at anytime,” senior Austin Hafdell said.

The second quarter began with two Mustang goals in the first minute. Culver City, however, scored three goals during this quarter to hold its lead and end the quarter with a score of 7-6.

“I thought it would be a tough battle just like it turned out to be,” coach Chris Jewett said.

Only three goals were scored during the third quarter due to the physical defense that was played by both teams, and only one goal was scored by Costa, which came from junior Mark Matsushima. Culver City was able to scratch across two more goals, and the quarter ended with a score of 9-7.

“If you don’t go out hard, it’s difficult to make comebacks,” Jewett said.

The intensity was ramped up in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs desperately tried to tie the game up. Costa and Culver City traded quick goals to start the quarter; however, the Centaurs continued to penetrate the Mustang defense and scored four goals.

Costa made a furious comeback scoring five goals in a row and not allowing Culver City to score for the rest of the game. Costa was still down by one goal in the final 30 seconds of the game and, despite three shots on goal, all missed and the Mustangs lost the game, 14-13.

“We underestimated these guys today and it ended up in a loss,” Goodlad said.

Costa plays today against Palos Verdes on the road for the second time on the season at 4 p.m.

“We need to come out harder and be ready,” Hafdell said.
