The Mira Costa Drama Department has become synonymous with quality musical productions. This year’s production, “Fiddler on the Roof,” is no different.

With high-quality set design and powerful performances from the show’s leads, the cast of “Fiddler on the Roof” elevates the unusually heavy production to one of Costa’s finest renditions.

“Fiddler on the Roof” covers the plight of Russian Jews in imperial Russia.

The central story line follows Tevya (Ron Yadin), a poor Jewish dairyman with three daughters:
Tzietle (Molly Curtis), Hodel (Delphi Borich) and Chava (Danielle Kay). Tevya faces the challenges of the changing morals of the 20th century in regards to marrying his daughters.

Set pieces help bring the show to life. Technical Director Cary Jordal did a masterful job creating subtle, yet rustic pieces that embodied the time period.

The biggest spectacle of the show comes from the musical genius of Richard Wedeen. His fiddling performance as the Fiddler before the second act will put the audience on its feet.

In a musical that relies on a male lead, Yadin delivered. From a pitch-perfect Yiddish accent to a larger-than-life
stage presence, Yadin possessed all the abilities to carry “Fiddler on the Roof.”

However, audiences may have left the auditorium confused over the emotional weight of the musical. From racial prejudice to a not-so-happy ending, the choice of “Fiddler on the Roof” was a much deeper and emotionally challenging script for the Drama Department to choose.

Easy-going high school audiences may not enjoy the subject matter as much as “Grease” or “Annie,” but any viewer can appreciate the skill of the cast. An impressive display of technical ability and acting chops brought the play to life.

“Fiddler on the Roof” carries on the long tradition of complex and successful musical productions put on by Mira Costa.

“Fiddler on the Roof” runs tonight at 7 p.m. and twice on Saturday. Tickets are $10 for students and $12 for adults.
