While most juniors are still stressed about choosing a college, junior Corie Bain has already committed to playing volleyball for Harvard University in the fall of 2013.

Bain has grown up around the sport because her brothers both played. She only played for fun up until seventh grade, when she began to play club volleyball.

“I always would mess around with my brothers on the beach” Bain said. “I was introduced to it and immediately fell in love with the sport.”

In addition to playing for the Mira Costa varsity team since freshman year, Bain currently plays for the club team “Surf City” in Huntington Beach.

Bain’s commitment to volleyball does come at a price. Bain has to attend many practices and games while trying to maintain a social life and keeping up with her 4.5 GPA.

“I am very busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Bain said. “I don’t think that I would be able to do as well as I have without all three aspects [school, social life, and volleyball], because theykeep me busy and I like that.”

Bain has won various awards for her athletic achievements, such as MVP Bay League in 2011, the MVP California Challenge in 2010 , and most recently in 2011 the Daily Breeze Player of the Year.

“The recognition I received from winning awards and talking to coaches made me realize that I have a future playing volleyball in college,” Bain said.

Once in college, Bain hopes to help Harvard improve.

“I want to help Harvard win the Ivy League,” Bain said. “They haven’t won it in a while, so my goal is to help them finally win a title again.”
