In the 2012-13 school year Mira Costa’s Model United Nations will debate and confer with different students across the country, in a variety of regional, national, and international conferences at Brown University, San Francisco, Paris, University of Pennsylvania, UC Berkley, UC Davis, Huntington and Edison.

At these conferences students often get the chance to participate in other activities such as river rafting or roaming cities which are unlike the South Bay.

“Model UN is such a great program because not only does it give students the opportunity to debate with students from around the country, but it gives us the opportunity to travel the world as well,” sophomore Emma Zimmerman said. “There aren’t many other programs who can say they do the same.”

Model UN teachers Wayne Knutson and Robert Timberlake led the program to a national ranking of second place for the 2011-2012 school year, and they plan to lead the MUN students to another successful year.

“Every year there is such a change and difference with the students,” Timberlake said. “We definitely have a full plate this year with more competitive conferences. But schools know we are coming this year, and I believe we are ready to win.”

Model United Nations has been a program at Mira Costa for many years, but recently, a distinguished source, Best Delegate, recognized it as a nationally ranked program. The critically and highly acclaimed program has grown in popularity in recent years. According to Secretary General, Taylor Lewis, Mira Costa is predicted to be very successful in the many conferences the Model United Nations program is partaking in.

“I expect Model United Nations to have a highly successful year of debate,” Lewis said. “Our high performances in last year’s conferences will cause us to face stronger competition this year, but I have no doubt that if we perform at the level we are capable of, we will have yet another successful season.”
