AP books are a necessity, despite the cost

Advanced Placement classes at Mira Costa High School can be costly. For students who are talented enough to take an AP class or multiple AP classes, this high cost is quite concerning. Because of the many students at Mira Costa, the number of AP textbooks fits the needs of the school. Students who are planning to take an AP class should have to purchase their textbooks and other materials because there are many benefits to owning your textbook. Despite the cost of it all, it is a good investment.

When AP students have to pay for their books, it can be difficult to find one in good condition and quality at a decent price. On the other hand, Mira Costa’s AP students should pay for their textbooks and other materials. AP students will have the freedom to mark their books as they see fit. AP teachers actually prefer that their students buy their textbooks for that very reason . Students can highlight areas of importance and be able to make notes throughout the book. This definitely helps studying and makes life easier for the student.

Some students do not find the cost of textbooks to be a problem. Others however, who are eligible to take these classes may not be able to afford all the materials that are required. According to Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendent, Michael Matthews, students are not required to buy their books. This year the district decided to purchase more AP books for student use, however many students chose to buy their books for annotating.

Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale believes this choice is better as well. When borrowing AP textbooks from the library, students do not have the option to mark as they please and Dale assumes that they would like to have that option.

As an AP Biology teacher, Dan Sponaugle prefers that students buy their books for studying. However, teachers do subsidize books for students who are unable to pay for them which shows how committed AP teachers are toward making their students successful. It also shows the importance of textbooks.

Purchasing an AP textbook may be expensive, but there are some alternatives that can save students money. Students who have already completed the class may be able to provide their textbook to a student who is looking to buy one. A used textbook can be just as good as a new one and sold for a reasonable price. These books can be found at basic shopping sites such as Amazon and Ebay.

A student who decides to buy their AP textbook may do better in the class, or classes, because they will have more freedom in how they study. This investment will prove to be beneficial in the future.
