UCLA blood drive returns

Over 170 people participated in the UCLA blood drive on Tuesday in the Mira Costa gymnasium.

Associated Student Body members urged students to donate blood in the weeks leading up to the drive, and 171 pints were collected in total.

“Donating blood is an easy way to help somebody,” senior Shay Gasperian said. “It’s the least I can do to help my community.”

UCLA’s Blood and Platelet Center holds a blood drive at Costa every semester. The blood is given directly to UCLA patients in need of blood transfusions.

“It is an honorable and gratifying experience to donate,“ UCLA Hospital lab tech. Claire de Guzman said. “The blood is going to a place that needs it most.”

ASB and UCLA hoped to get at least 180 students to donate. They fell just shy of their goal.

“ASB members contacted students to sign up for the drive,” ASB commissioner of special events senior Cynthia Aragon said. “Next semester, we hope for even more student participation.”
