Many students at Mira Costa know senior Josh Querbash as a varsity
football player, but there is more to his story.

Team captain and running back Querbash has been playing football since he
was six. Querbash was inspired by his brother and role model Peter who is a 2005
Costa graduate and former varsity football player.

“He used to take time out of his day to train me because he knew that I
wanted to play football at Costa. Because of what he did for me, I am the player
that I am today,” Querbash said about his brother

As co-team captain of the 2012 varsity team, Querbash inspires his team to
do better and because of that, the coaches can count on him to do his role as
captain the right way no matter what he is going through.

“He is a very unique individual, and he is the spirit of our defense. He is an
inspiration to some of the other players,” defensive coach Ray Lee said.

In addition to the respect Querbash has earned from Lee and the rest of the
coaching staff, Querbash is also well-respected by his teammates and fellow team
co-captains because of the way he plays and because he’s fun to be around.

“I was glad that I had the chance to be co-captain with Querbash. Also I
knew that it would be a good year and also a fun one with Josh,” Co-Captain
Corey Sanicky said.

However, the expectations of a Bay League and CIF championship were
dashed when Querbash tore his ACL during a Bay League win against Peninsula
Oct. 19, knocking him out of action for the remainder of the Bay League season
and limiting him to one CIF game against Highland High School.

“I was very depressed but I had to deal with it. I tried the best way I could to
be on the field helping my team. But seeing my team playing without me killed me
to the extreme. I was very proud of what my team did this year,” said Querbash.

Losing Querbash was a huge loss for the entire football program, according
to coach Don Morrow and his teammates.

“I felt bad for Querbash after I found out that he tore his ACL because I
know how much football meant to him especially this year,” head coach Don
Morrow said.

Even though Querbash couldn’t play this season the team practically
dedicated every game to him and they played there hardest knowing he was on the
sideline watching.

“We played every game for Querbash because we knew if it happened to any
of us he would do the same for us,” teammate Khalil McClain said.

Querbash is now working out and getting his knee ready to play football in
college.

“I still haven’t made a choice upon which school I am going to end up at,”
said Querbash.
