For most Costa students, Spring Break is a time for relaxing with friends, but some students choose to travel to foreign and indigenous lands.

Next spring break, Costa plans on offering students of all grades the chance to participate in a trip to South Africa. Mira Costa guidance counselor Brittany Beauchaine is orchestrating the trip. According to Beauchaine, students will visit many different cities where they will be able to experience the history, culture and wildlife of South Africa.

“I have been taking student trips for the last four years, “ Beauchaine said. “ I was a chaperone on the Japan trip. Next year, I am really looking forward to travelling around South Africa.”

The trip will begin in Soweto, an urban area of Johannesberg. Here, students will have the opportunity to learn about Soweto’s contribution to fashion, music, language and politics.

“I think that travel is the best way to learn about the world,” sophomore Kaleo Kinimaka-Ahkoi said. “We can learn a lot about it in school, but nothing really beats physical contact with the people and places you are trying to learn about.”

Students will also stop in Cape Town. While there, the southernmost town of South Africa, students will get to take a ride in a cable car to the summit of Table Mountain, where they will visit several native villages.

“The trip is going to be incredible to see the sights,” sophomore Monique Bolsajian said. “I am looking forward to being able to see and experience the culture.”

This trip will include a jungle safari, where students will have the chance to observe wild African animals. Along with exploring the wonders of South Africa, students will donate personal items to schools and read to attending children.

“I think this trip will be more interactive than other school trips offered because we get to be involved in service,” junior Michaela Loudermilk said.

Students who are interested in signing up should see Beauchaine as soon as possible as she will only be taking 20 students.

“I am only taking a couple students so we will be able to get to know each other,” Beauchaine said. “I want this trip to be an eye-opening experience.”
