Mira Costa softball has been competing in the Katella Tournament in Orange County for the past two weekends and will return tomorrow to finish the tournament.

In their double-header on Saturday, the Mustangs played Diamond Bar High School in their first game, winning 7-0. Costa also defeated Orange High School, 7-4, in the second game. The girls currently stand in third place in the tournament which will continue this weekend.

“I think we did better in this tournament because we took advantage of our scoring opportunities,” senior left-fielder Montana Hunter said. “We need to continue progressing defensively and focus on not letting other teams stand in our way.”

In the first game against Diamond Bar, the Mustangs led for the majority of the game with contributions from senior center fielder Taylor Glover, who went 3 for 3 with a triple. Sophomore second baseman Brittany Werre went 3 for 4 overall with three RBIs in Costa’s 7-0 win.

“We have really improved since the beginning of the season because we have learned to communicate better on the field,” Glover said. “I’m glad with the way these games turned out and hope we can play even better when Bay League starts.”

In the second game of the day, the Mustangs scored the first run against Orange High School during the third inning. The Mustangs held the lead throughout the game and got the 7-4 victory. Hunter went 1 for 2 and scored one run, and sophomore outfielder Kasey Hutton went 3 for 4 including a triple and two RBIs.

“The girls played very well, and I’m happy that we won both games,” coach Richard Amberik said. “I feel like the rest of the tournament will be more difficult, but the girls are ready to face those type of teams.”
