Costa teachers from all departments nominated seniors Meghan Burns, Brady Currey, Adam Gerard, Lauren Hagedorn and Isaac Siegemund-Broka on March 26 for the 2013 Student of the Year.

This year, French teacher Lauri Gonalons and Spanish teacher Kimberly Romero led the nomination process and compiled a list of the top 10 percent of the senior class by unweighted grade point average for teachers. Each department then voted for the top three choices it felt should be candidates for the award.

“Besides their academic qualifications, which is weighted 60% in the selection process, we also looked at co-curricular activities and citizenship to compile a list of nominees,” Gonalons said.

The five candidates were then notified of their nominations and filled out an application that also consisted of a personal questionnaire. Each Costa department then received these applications and held a meeting in which they discussed the nominated students to find a potential winner.

“I think Student of the Year recognizes a lot of people whose work goes under the radar a lot of times,” Burns said. “The people who are nominated do really amazing things for the school and outside of the school, and it’s an honor to be nominated with these other people.”

The Student of the Year will be chosen at a special Ed Council meeting in which at least one department chair must attend and submit his or her vote for one of the candidates. The final winner will not be announced until the All Awards Ceremony on May 30.

“All of the nominees are exemplary students who work hard and bring energy, passion and brilliance to Mira Costa,” Hagedorn said.
