With a shot at advancing further in the CIF playoffs in the third round, the Mustangs could not come up with a win.

The Mira Costa softball team lost 11-4 to Kaiser High School at home on Monday in the second round of the CIF playoffs. The girls finished with a 21-7-1 overall record.

“This wasn’t our best game, but we all went in as a team full of energy,” senior center fielder Taylor Glover said. “It’s just a bittersweet ending to the season.”

The first inning included five runs for Kaiser High School, which jumped on the Mustangs’ pitching early.
Kaiser scored one more run in the second inning, but the Mustangs managed to score two runs off two bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the third, making the score 6-2 in favor of Kaiser.

“The game could have gone differently, but we allowed Kaiser to score too many runs in the first inning after making an error with two outs,” junior shortstop Sydney Haugh said.

For the rest of the game, Kaiser continued to dominate on offense and defense. Kaiser freshman pitcher Irene Herrera, who only gave up three hits and had five strikeouts, only allowed two more runs in the game. Kaiser scored five more runs throughout the rest of the affair.

“Our mindset wasn’t all there, but we can’t win them all,” sophomore second baseman Brittany Werre said. “Throughout the season, we played some tough teams. With such a rigorous preseason schedule, we were prepared for Bay League, which helped make the season better.”

Senior catcher Nikki Gialketsis went 0-for-2 with two walks and two runs batted in. Glover went 1-for-3 with two walks and also scored two runs in the loss.

“This team is made up of amazing talent with so many underclassman who will do very well in the future,” Gialketsis said.
