Girls volleyball falls to Los Alamitos

The Mustangs lost to Los Alamitos High School, 3-2, on Friday.

In set 1 Costa came out playing hard, but Los Alamitos stood their ground and kept the game close. Costa took an early lead 12-9 and Los Alamitos began to play an aggressive game from there, taking a 18-14 lead. Soon after, Costa cut the lead to 23-22. The game was tied, 25-25, when Los Alamitos took the next two points to win set 1, 27-25.

In Set 2 the Mustangs took an early lead 5-3, then soon after that 11-7. Costa kept the lead for the rest of the game making it 16-11 and then 20-14. Costa won the next five points and won set 2, 25-14.

Los Alamitos started set 3 off strong with an 8-2 lead over Costa. Los Alamitos did not back down from there, making it 16-6. Costa made a comeback taking the lead, 20-16, but then Los Alamitos took set 3, 25-19.

Costa began set 4 off to a rocketing start 9-4. Costa had the lead the rest of the game and made it 15- 8 then 20-10. Finally Costa won five of the next eight points and took set 4 by a score of 25-13.

Set 5 went back and forth and there were many tied points throughout the set. In the beginning, it was tied 3-3, but then Costa took a 7-4 lead. Los Alamitos battled back to tie it at 8-8, and then took the lead 11-10. Costa won three straight points and made it 13-11. The Mustangs could not hold the lead and lost four straight points, losing set 5, 15-13, and the whole game 3-2.

Junior outside hitter Skylar Caputo had 17 kills and 11 digs for Mira Costa while senior outside hitter Lan Nguyen added 14 kills and 12 digs. Junior middle blocker Katie Rethmeyer added 12 kills and six blocks and senior libero Brooke Feld had 22 digs and two aces. Senior setter Sammy Furlan had 30 assists and 11 digs.

“We played a great match tonight and I am proud of the effort on the court. We rebounded from a disappointing first set loss, 26-28 and crushed them 25-14,” coach Lisa Zimmerman said. “Los Al’s big hitter was a little too much for us to handle in the end, but we fought hard and will get better.”

Costa’s next home game is against Palos Verdes High School on Wednesday.
