Members of Mira Costa’s Young Democrats Club have gone to neighborhoods in Torrance to find individuals likely to vote for Cliff Numark, the Torrance City Council member running to be elected into the Board of Trustees at El Camino College.

Senior Joe Marine was interviewed and selected for Campaign Coordinator of Volunteers. Young Democrats Club president Marine became aware of the campaign due to his connection in Numark’s campaigning party.

Members of Young Democrats Club went door-to-door to inform local residents about Numark’s campaign. The club called voters to raise awareness of the election and inform them about his policies and plans, such as improving the application process to a four-year university after attending a two-year college like El Camino.

“There is not a candidate more able to improve education in California than Numark,” Marine said.

Prior to Numark’s election to the Torrance City Council, he worked as city commissioner for the Parks and Recreation Commission, Community Services and Commission and the Cable Television Advisory Board. He has also assisted the Red Cross by recruiting 400,000 people.

“Though we won’t know until [Nov. 5], the day of the election, we have received very warm receptions from the constituents that we have talked to and educated about the [Board of Trustees] election and Numark’s platform,” Marine said.

According to club members, Numark has been working to better California’s education system by helping students find a suitable community college and making the transfer to a four-year university more affordable and manageable. In the past, Numark has improved electrical efficiency in the city of Torrance and increased the number of working Torrance policemen, while saving the city approximately $300,000.

“He’s definitely among the more experienced and qualified candidates, and I volunteered to make sure our community has a sound board,” club member junior Rachel Waxman said.

Numark currently serves as chair of the Strategic Plan Committee on the Torrance City Council, the voting delegate to the South Bay Economic Development Partnership and alternate voting delegate to the League of California Cities and the sanitation of Los Angeles cities.

“The volunteers who have worked with Numark and his campaign have had a wonderful time,” Marine said. “It definitely builds a sense of camaraderie within the club.”

According to Marine, the campaign audience was welcoming and willing to hear about the candidate and what he has to offer for the future of the city.

“The campaigning process was really remarkable because so many people were interested in the candidate’s ability to help with the community and even our state,” sophomore Olivia Everhard said.
Members of the club chose to support Numark because of his contributions to the city of Torrance and California. According to members, Numark is involved in bettering the education of California students and can connect with college students.

“The only response that I can give is that [Numan] is by far the only candidate running in the election who can truly better the Californian education system, and, therefore, better the nation,” Marine said.
