Getting accepted to college is known to be very competitive. Many students at Mira Costa play sports at a high level, but only a select few go on to play at the college level.
Three Mira Costa senior volleyball players, Emma White, Andi Zbojniewicz, and Ella Rosenfeld, have been recruited and will attend colleges.
Zbojniewicz has been accepted to the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and Rosenfeld has been accepted at the University of California at Irvine. Both girls have received three-year scholarships. White will be attending the University of Pennsylvania next fall.
“I was recognized by the University of Pennsylvaia because I sent out letters and tapes, played in recruiting volleyball tournaments, and met with coaches,” White said.
The players say that participating in high school   sports gives athletes a chance to be noticed by colleges and universities, and recieve scholarships. Athletics can also make school a more enjoyable experience.
“Being on a sports team in college is going to be very beneficial for me as a freshman, because you automatically have a group of friends,” Zbojniewicz said.
A high school coach’s opinion can influence a college’s decision to accept a student. Girls volleyball coach Lisa Zimmerman has been a reference for several students like White, Zbojniewicz and Rosenfeld.
“Nowadays, I am someone who is just put as a reference for students. I am generally asked by coaches what type of student-athlete kids are. I also have the ability to contact coaches to inform them on students who have not been noticed as much as they deserve,” Zimmerman said.
According to the atheletes, the opportunity to play at the college- level is an honor in and of itself that comes as a reward from hard word, dedication and a competitive spirit.
“I have wanted to play college level volleyball since the seventh grade. I am so happy and grateful to be able to play volleyball at such an amazing school. Words cannot describe the way I feel,” Rosenfeld said.
