Following a win against South Torrance High, the Mira Costa girls soccer team kept its four-game winning streak alive.

The girls faced off against Harvard Westlake on Friday with a 5-0 shutout.

The Mustangs started off strong with a goal from junior forward Megan Carver in the first minute of play.

“I can’t believe we scored that early, but it was great and gave us a lot of confidence,” junior defender Lauren Irwin said.

After the first goal, Costa dominated the possession with shots from seniors midfielder Mandy McKeegan and forward Kimby Keever. In the 25’ minute, freshman forward Viviana Villacorta scored, bringing the Mustangs’ lead to to 2-0.

“After the first goal, we knew we needed to score again to maintain our lead,” McKeegan said.

Right before the end of the first half, junior forward McKenna Doyle scored the third goal for Costa by following up a shot from senior midfielder Brooke Taylor.

“The third goal really kept up the momentum for our team to keep attacking,” Doyle said.

McKeegan started off the second half with a shot from the left side of the penalty into the far right corner of the net, giving Costa its fourth goal.

“We spread the field so we had enough room to work and make things happen,” Keever said.

Harvard Westlake managed to get a few shots off, but junior goalkeeper Nonie Frishette was consistent in her blocks.

In the 65’ minute of play, sophomore midfielder Hanna Watkins threw the ball in to McKeegan, who attempted a shot. Freshman forward Allison Roth followed the deflection to score the final goal.

“The last goal really cemented the win for us,” Irwin said.

Costa’s non-league record is 8-1-1. The girls played Palos Verdes High School yesterday, however results were unavailable due to time of publication.

“We played an amazing game and had great chemistry, which makes me so excited for this season,” McKeegan said.
