Valentines day is a special day to celebrate your love and affection for people all over the world. Here at Mira Costa, students celebrate by sending their love with special cards, roses, or big lollipops to people they admire.

Every year during Valentine’s day, associated student body holds a booth at break and lunch selling cards, roses, and lollipops. Students rush to pick out which special treat they want to send. Every year valgrams are a popular and fun way for ASB to make easy money and let students elebrate the holiday.

“Valentine’s day isn’t usually the best holiday, but val grams are a good way to celebrate Valentine’s day and an easy way to show you appreciate certain people,” ASB member sophomore Kit Chavers said.

Cards, roses and lollipops were sent out for one dollar each. Students can put any message they want on the cards, or they can choose to make it anonymous or not. Students can send them to friends, and they are also a good buy because you can send them to an admirer. They were delivered on February 14th during 4th and 5th period by ASB members.

“I’ve been at Mira Costa for four years and every year I send my friends val grams. They make the holiday more enjoyable,” senior Lauren Cassen said.

Every year, valgrams make ASB around 700 or 800 and they make a profit of about two hundred dollars. The flowers, roses, are the most successfully sold and ASB had ordered over a hundred roses to be sold at break and lunch to students for other students.

“I’ve bought valgrams this year and last year and it’s a really fun idea and a good way to get in the Valentine’s day spirit,” sophomore Brett Davis said.

According to ASB members, the valgram sale in previous years have been much more successful due to the fact that bands around campus are selling singing val grams. Members of ASB have tried to improve the system by ordering more roses and larger candies, but due to the competition, sales have been at a minimum.

“The advantage to what’s happening right now is that there are groups performing for val grams who are making a lot of money,” advisor Lisa Claypoole said.

Student bands around campus are also selling valgrams. They have given students the oppurtunity to pay three dollars to have a song sung to a friend or someone they admire. The bands include the sax pack and a band called Coterie who are selling snipets of three songs on valentines day.

“This is my first year in the girl’s acapella group and I am loving every minute of it,” Coterie band member junior Sarah Colen said.

Since last year and previous years, the only thing they have changed is the candy. They have decided to go with a more well known company, and get larger candies to draw more people in.

“Val gram sales are fun throughout Valentine’s day because it is usually a holiday that goes unnoticed by people who are single, but at Mira Costa we try to get everyone to have fun during this holiday,” ASB member sophomore Olivia Everhard said.

This year, the most sold items are the roses. Wether or not people send them to their person of interest or their friends, roses are a beautiful way to celebrate. Unfortunately, a limited amount of valgrams have been sold this year compared to years in the past.

“I think val grams are a good idea because it’s a cute way to show people you care about them,” ASB member sophomore Molly Dvorkin said.
