Most kids who play computer games are interested in playing for the rush that comes along with it without acknowledging what goes into the creation, but Costa senior Steven Casey has spent six years learning about the dynamics of video games.

Casey became interested in computer science in the sixth grade. Since then, he has learned how to build computers and design games and computer programs.

“My brother got me into computers, but it was the sheer number of things that can be accomplished with computers that kept me interested,” Casey said.

Casey has spent his time learning about computer science and video game design on the internet. From there, Casey moved on to building homemade computers and working with clientele from all over the world.

“I currently work with people all over the world,” Casey said. “I’ve worked with people in Canada, Ukraine, Russia, and all over Europe.”

The computer science industry is one of the leading forms of entertainment and job opportunity in today’s world. Casey, though still in high school, has already entered this field of work and intends to continue with it in the future and, hopefully, make a career out of it. He is currently working to create Project Reality, a game that will be free to play when it is released.

“I am really excited for Project Reality to be released,” Casey said. “It has taken a lot of effort, but it should be a great game.”

Casey spends three days a week working on computers and designing video games. With the ease of working from home, Casey has never found any difficulty keeping up with his schoolwork or extracurricular activities and manages to maintain his busy schedule.

“When I actually do work, it is completely up to my discretion and rarely ever impacts my school life and social life” Casey said. “I find it more interesting than anything we learn in school.”

Many high school students feel lost when they think of future careers. This is not the situation for Casey due to his involvement in the world of technology.

“When your passion happens to be the fastest growing entertainment sector in the country, I don’t see why not get involved,” Casey said.

Casey’s plans for the future are closely related to his interest and involvement in the area of technology, specifically computer sciences. After he graduates high school, Casey intends to study computer science while attending college with the hopes of entering the working force in the field of digital entertainment.

“I look forward to studying this in college,” Casey said. “Hopefully, after college, I can find a job in the entertainment industry that will allow me to continue my path in the digital world.”
