The Mira Costa High School sign on the corner of Peck Avenue and Artesia Boulevard was hit and destroyed on September 26th due to the collision between junior Timmy Shar and math teacher Courtney Bannerman.
The collision between the two led Shar’s car to be mounted onto the sidewalk and the sign in front of the Costa campus was shattered.
According to Bannerman, she was turning left off of Artesia Boulevard onto Peck Avenue on a yellow light, and the first car stopped to let her through. Shar, in the car after, kept going straight and collided with Bannerman and flew into the Mira Costa sign.
“The police deemed it my fault because it was a yellow light and he legally had right of way,” Bannerman said. “I don’t agree, it was his fault for gunning it.”
Neither Bannerman or Shar were severely injured, but the hit took a toll on both of them. On the scene, neither of them noticed a significant trauma, but throughout the day, teaching and studying became challenging.
“I didn’t have any injuries straight after the accident, but later in the day I had whiplash,” Shar said. “I had to miss the first 3 periods and I had a headache all day.”
The Costa administration is working on fixing the sign as soon as they possibly can, but a set date on when the project to rebuild it will begin is not yet established.
“We’ll get to it when we get to it,” Costa principal Dr. Ben Dale said. “We’re going to get that sign back up.”
