The Mira Costa Track and Field team competed against Redondo Union High School last Thursday. Boys varsity performed well while the girls team lost to the Sea Hawks.

Boys varsity won the meet ten points ahead of Redondo with a final total of 73. Senior P.J. Onusconich won the 110 meter high-hurdles and the 300 meter low-hurdles. Senior Chris Fong placed first in the long jump and the triple jump. Senior Matt Wenner beat redondo by 2 inches in the high jump with a height of 6’ 2’’. Senior Joe Anderson won the shot put and senior Brandon Mills won the discus throw for Costa as well. The boys finished with a win in the 4×400 meter relay, beating Redondo by 27 milliseconds.

“This meet was intense,” Onusconich said. “It’s always crazy when we go against Redondo, but we pulled it off. There’s a bit more pressure during these meets because we want to beat our rivals.”

Girls varsity lost 44-92. Freshman Shante Robinson won the 110 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. Senior Kimi Markley placed first in the triple jump and sophomore Myan Elrington placed second. Elrington also placed third in the long jump. The girls lost both team relays, but did reasonably well in the shot put and discus throw when senior Chelsea Tatum placed second.

“Everyone competed really well in this meet,” said junior Sophie Haas-Goldberg. “Now we just have to beat West High so we can secure our Bay League title.”

The Mustangs have their final Bay League meet away against West High tomorrow.
