Four golfers from the Costa boys golf team advanced to the second round of California Interscholastic Federation Playoffs on Monday but did not qualify for the third round.

Seniors Kyle Cohen and JJ Standberry along with juniors CJ Coleman and Nick Harry played in the CIF Individual Regionals at Skylinks Golf Course on Monday, hoping to place in the top 20 in orderto advance to the next level of CIF.

Standberry shot the best for Costa with a 77. However, he tied with 14 other golfers and had to compete in a playoff for the three advancing spots. Standberry missed an eight-foot putt in the playoff round, ending his individual CIF run.

“I gave the round everything I had,” Standberry said. “Unfortunately, my best that day was not good enough.”

Harry, Coleman and Cohen shot a 78, 79 and 82, respectively, but none of them shot low enough to advance. Due to windy weather conditions, the course played more difficult than its 72 par, only allowing one player in the tournament to shoot under.

“It was a very tough day in the wind,” Cohen said. “None of us are very pleased with our performances.”

The boys golf team will play in the CIF team round on Monday at Lakewood Country Club.

“We’re one of the, if not the most, well-rounded teams,” coach Ryan Branning said. “We have a great chance at going all the way to state as a team.”
