Strengthening skills while broadening perspectives in real-world settings is one way a Mira Costa junior Sameeha Jilani is spending her summer. Jilani will be participating in the internship program offered by Gensler, a design firm.

Established in 1965, Gensler is a design firm that integrates advanced technology into its projects. The company believes that “design is one of the most powerful strategic tools for securing lasting competitive advantage” and was involved in the improvement of Dodger Stadium. Gensler is dedicated to improving people’s lives through interior design, urban planning or technological design.

“The Gensler Intern Experience empowers emerging talent to shape their future through an experience which values passionate curiosity, collaborative entrepreneurship, diverse perspectives and the pursuit of excellence,” Gensler Human Resources Manager Laurie Tartagni said.

The program will start in July, and Jilani will work between 15 and 20 hours a week for eight weeks. Jilani will attend client meetings, attend job sites that are under construction, tour completed projects, attend all staff meetings and work on construction documents.

“I’m very excited to participate in this internship,” Jilani said. “I think that touring Gensler’s completed projects and working on current proposals will help give me hands-on experience in an industry I’m very interested in.”

Jilani heard about the internship program through the Manhattan Beach Mayor’s Youth Council when Gensler Chief Executive Officer Andy Cohen spoke to the council. Cohen described the basics of what Gensler does and the opportunities the students will recieve from the internship.

“I chose to participate because I enjoy architecture and urban planning, two of Gensler’s specialties,” Jilani said. “I think that Gensler will offer me the opportunity to recieve work experience in a meaningful way.”
