Scheduling Conflict Causes Math Classes to Switch

On the third day of school, all students in Math Teacher’s Linda Gesualdi Pre-Calculus classes were transferred to classes taught by Math Teacher Jason Robertson.

At the beginning of the year, Mr. Robertson was scheduled to teach two periods of Calculus AB. Since his assigned classes were very small, Mr. Robertson’s classes were combined into one, leaving one class period of his open. The transfer of these classes was created to fill this period.

“Since Mr. Robertson needed another class I gave him two of my Pre-Calculus classes because he already taught Pre-Calculus, and it would balance it out,” Linda Gesualdi said. “In return, I took his Calculus class to make it easier for him.”

Since the Math Department needed to open an Algebra 2 class, Gesualdi was given the newly opened class to fill her schedule.

“We looked at other options because we didn’t want to have to move kids, but the other options were too complicated.” Mrs. Gesualdi said. “I believe our choice was the least complicated and it was easier this way. Otherwise, many more students would have their schedules changed.”

Robertson and Gesualdi are co chairs of the Mira Costa Math Department and are both qualified to teach Pre-Calculus and Calculus.

“We believed that this switch, even though some students might be upset, would benefit the students the most and would be the minimal switches possible for the student’s schedule” Gesualdi said.

According to Mira Costa Vice Principal Ian Drummond, this was the only plausible solution to the conflict.

“I recognize that students were shifted in maths, but there really was no other way to alleviate that issue,” Drummond said.
