Old fields prove detrimental to Mira Costa Athletics

At Mira Costa many sports are stuck with playing on fields that are in poor playing condition. This is because there are always teams using the fields in the fall and winter football takes control of the turf field, leaving the rest of the sports with the fields on Meadows.

Mira Costa has three fields for teams to use. The main turf field is where everyone plays their games, the field on meadows that is used for teams’ practices, and there are also the baseball fields which have extra space for teams to practice on. In addition to the fields there are also two weight rooms one for football and baseball and another for the rest of the sports to use.

During the football season from two to five the football team is on the turf leaving the rest of the sports to either practice later at night, go somewhere else for practices, or practice on a field that is in poor condition for practices. For Mira Costa football gets priority for practice times and spaces. While that is normal, it is also important for other School sports to get proper field space. According to Sophomore Walker Heintz for this season of Costa Soccer they have been neglected to the corner of the baseball field sharing the space with freshmen football making it hard to get good space to practice on at Costa.

Mira Costa’s sports programs have had some success and it is important to keep our teams as well equipped to compete. Many of the teams like the Boy’s Soccer team are made to practice on below par fields for practices where the field is either muddy or full of bumps which are a major problem for the boy’s practices.

This is something that could be fixed by having the old fields turfed over which, while expensive, would be useful for Mira Costa’s sports as it is something that is not needed to be maintained and is always in perfect condition.

According to Costa Boys Soccer Coach Gary Smith having a turf field to practice on would be useful because it is always in good condition and the current field we practice on is in bad condition and cause problem for the players while practicing.

Having another turf field would be beneficial to all sports players at Costa because it would add another area for teams to practice and workout without interrupting each other also with the current state of fields at Costa it is necessary for all the teams to be able to have practices at school and not have to worry about hurting themselves on bad fields.

According to Sophomore Boys Soccer Player Nicolas Brunstein playing on a turf field when training for the soccer season would be very helpful because the other fields are not in good condition for practicing or playing.

It may seem that while it is a little bit unnecessary to have multiple turf fields just for one high school, it is still needed because of the amount of different teams that practice at Costa. Many of them are still working for good field space.

Overall it would be useful for sports on campus to have a second turf field that many teams could practice on during the season and in the offseason just for working out and improving the teams. Having a second turf field may seem unnecessary but in the end it would be helpful for Mira Costa’s sports teams.
