The Hermosa Beach City Council voted Sept. 23 to keep the farmers market at Clark Field and add an additional market at the Hermosa Beach pier.

City Council had originally planned to move the market permanently to the pier, but Hermosa Beach residents collectively began to oppose the move. An email sent out by Hermosa Valley parents addressed parental concerns regarding the student tradition of walking to the market after school on Fridays.

“I like the market location now because it’s easier to access,” Hermosa Beach resident Leah Vriesman-Wee said. “I’d prefer that it stay there during Friday afternoon.”

According to the Hermosa Beach Parks and Recreation Department, the market is moving to the pier to increase pedestrian traffic and add family-friendly activities.

“The Raw Inspiration California Certified Farmers Market will help run the pier market, which has been very successsful with other markets in the past,” Hermosa Beach Parks and Recreations officer Jani Lange said. “The pier’s reputation of having a raging night life will hopefully turn into a more family-friendly zone.”

The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce will host the new market at the pier on Wednesday afternoons, starting in October or November.

“We have no problem with the pier farmers market going through,” President of the Hermosa Beach Rotary Club Trav Devine said. “All we really care about is keeping the Clark Field market and keeping it successful.”

The farmers market on the pier will be slightly larger than the original market and will have 10 more stands than the original Clark Field market.

“Hopefully, the market on the pier will also become successful like the Clark Field market and attract more people,” Hermosa Beach Parks and Recreations officer Jani Lange said.
