Recently, Mira Costa principal Dr. Ben Dale has reinstated the Ed Council that he disbanded last year due to inefficient decision making. The reinstatement should bring a positive output to Costas decisions and will keep the teachers happy and informed about the decisions being made.

According to Dale, the Ed Council was created in 1991 and was meant to provide input to the principals decision making. Over time, the council gained more authority and, and currently, each department votes on proposals for approval. In March of 2014, Dale decided to indefinitely postpone Ed Council meetings because according to Dale, the committee had became dysfunctional to goal-oriented progress for the school and that he had a lot of frustration of how we made decisions.

When Ed Council was disbanded, many teachers outraged with anger because they were unable to express their opinions. According to History Department Chair Bill Fauver, the decision to disband Ed Council threatened to fatally derail the morale of our faculty and undermine the gains they have made as a staff. Now that Ed Council is back teachers will be happier towards the district and will feel like their opinions are being valued toward key school decisions.

Now that Ed Council is back, better school decisions will be made because Dr.Dale will have the teachers insight, knowledge, and ideas. Dr. Dale hosts monthly meetings where all teachers are welcome to come and express their opinions. According to Biology teacher Jessica Bledsoe Ed Council is an organization that does good things for teachers and students here at Mira Costa and she thinks that its reinstatement is a positive thing for the school. She’s also happy about some of the changes made because it seems like its a body thats more structured, organized, and focused on attainable goals.

Not everyone is thrilled on Ed Councils reinstatement. Some teachers feel that meetings will still go nowhere without some kind of structure to the meetings. Even though there is a lot of arguing taking place in the meetings, the issues have to be addressed, and teachers want to play a role in the decision making.

Since its reinstatement at the beginning of this school year, Ed Council has improved life for students and teachers at Mira Costa. Not only has it helped better decisions to be made, but it satisfies the teachers needs by making their ideas and opinions matter.
