The Mira Costa Dance Company hosted its annual winter performance on Dec. 4, “Dance the Night Away.”

About 20 dancers from both the beginning and advanced-level dance classes performed. There was a total of 20 dances in various styles, including jazz, ballet, hip-hop and lyrical dance.

“We get to show our passion for dance at the show, and everyone gets to see how much hard work and dedication we have put into the dances to make them great,” senior Madi Kotero said.

The show opened with a dance to the song “Sugar Rum Cherry” that included all members of the show. The finale that also consisted of the entire class was a Bollywood-style dance. Dance teacher Yvonne Johnson and the dance students choreographed all of the performances.

“The advanced class is a great opportunity to practice and choreograph all of the dances,” senior Dana Sheckter said. “Our teacher has been really helpful, and it is a great creative outlet for the students.”

According to Sheckter, the money that was raised will help pay for things such as costumes for future performances.

“We all work extremely hard to pull off the shows,” Sheckter said, “But it is all worth it when it comes together and everyone in the audience gets to see the dances that we have come up with.”

The winter show was the first of three opportunities that the dance class members have to showcase their work throughout the year. The class will also perform at the winter assembly on Dec. 19 and at their spring dance show in June.

“I really enjoyed watching the winter show,” senior Erin Winett said. “Everyone can tell that they put so much time and effort into the dances, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with for their next two performances.”
