High School sports are taken very seriously these day, and the number of sports teams that let everyone participate are decreasing. Coaches can’t have kids on the team who aren’t going to try, and push themselves to their limits. Sports teams should have cuts so the team can perform at its peak, with no distractions from unwilling players.

Whether or not High school sports should have cuts has been highly debated. According to Mira Costa’s athletic website the only sports that currently offer no-cut programs are girls and boys water polo, wrestling, and football. Girls and boys cross country, and swim team both used to be no-cut programs, but as of last year they started making cuts.

Sports teams need to have cuts for multiple reasons. The first reason being that high school sports are getting much more competitive. Having good sports teams makes a big name for your school. The next reason is that many serious athletes come to Mira Costa for the high athletic caliber here. They need to have the best possible atmosphere to succeed and accomplish their athletic goals. If some students are in the sport to hang out with the friends they are taking away from the team as a whole.

According to sophomore wrestler Jacob Bonilla, the wrestling room is very chaotic at times with some of the wrestlers distracting the team. Some wrestlers are in their to compete and get better, and some are their to mess around. The ones that are in there to mess around are faking injuries and constantly finding reasons not to compete. Wrestling should have cuts just like many other sports. Wrestlers should be evaluated by their skill, and their will to be on the team. If they have neither then they shouldn’t be there.

The main arguments that supports no-cut sports are that high school sports should be a kids last opportunity to join a team and find out what you enjoy doing without having the pressure of being cut. This is a very good argument but at the end of the day it seems as if kids are in sports for the wrong reasons and its taking up space and coaching attention that kids who care could be receiving.

According to Mira Costa wrestling coach Daniel Arpajon, no cut sports are very fair in the sense that everyone is allowed to participate, but they are not fair in the sense that athletes who want to excel in the sport are getting less time being coached.

Mira Costa no-cut sports are slowly decreasing due to the amount of kids who want to participate. Mira costa sports should have cuts so the players who deserve to be there are the ones there. Dedicated players deserve to have the best environment to achieve success.
