Mira Costa’s English Department is in the process of creating a new essay-writing manual that provides updated, standardized writing guidelines and examples of proper essay structure for students and teachers.
According to English Department Chair Jonathan Westerberg, the main objective of the manual is to provide Costa students with consistent and coherent information on how to properly construct interpretive essays throughout their academic career.
“When consistently presented with the same approaches and descriptions of writing, students should be able to better retain a clear understanding of how to write well in an academic setting,” English teacher David Piorek said.
The manual will include a sample prompt and essay that the English Department wrote together. The English Department plans on implementing the manual into all English classes by the 2015-16 school year.
“The English Department will continue to broaden the scope of the manual over the years to include other genres of writing so that students have similar access to other modes assigned by teachers,” Westerberg said.
