Although ski week was originally created to give students an opportunity to spend time in the mountains, Costa’s broadcast jounalism class spent the week in tropical Cuba.

Broadcast students visited Cuba from Feb 14 to 22 . The students were mostly in Havana, but traveled outside of the city some days to see the other parts of Cuba.

“I was  an incredible experience,”  broadcast news director junior Kit Chavers said. “Technically, the only reason we were able to travel there as Americans was because it was for an educational purpose.”

While there, the students filmed documentaries on topics of their choice including Cuban food and music. Senior broadcast jounalist Sarah Keneipp chose the topic of Cuban music.

“I am really passionate about music to begin with and it was really interesting to talk to people about how music touches them,” Keneipp said.

The students filmed the documentary in groups of two to three people. According to broadcast journalism student Lily Travis, working in groups made the documentary filming more interesting.

“I really liked working in a group because we constantly were bouncing ideas off of each other of where to go and who to interview,” Travis said. “It was a bonding experience with the class.”

Along with filming documentaries, the students had free time to experience and immerse themselves in the Cuban culture.

“We were able to tour many parts of Cuba that allowed us to see how different the culture was,” Travis said. “I think my highlight of the trip was going to a cigar factory. It was so interesting to see.”

Due to the length and detail of the documentaries, they will not be shown on The Mustang Morning News; however, the documentaries will be shown at the end of the year at the Video Festival.

“I would love to go back again,” Keneipp said. “I want people to see the real Cuba and not the one we hear about in the history books.”
