Los Angeles District Attorney Mark Williams presented new student privacy measures in the statewide Assembly Bill 1584 and Senate Bill 1177 at the Manhattan Beach Unified School District’s March 4 Board of Trustees meeting in order to ensure MBUSD’s compliance with the new laws.

Assembly Bill 1584 specifies contract requirements between school districts and third party technology providers.

Senate Bill 1177 implemented a Student Online Personal Information Protection Act, which requires all technology providers to notify districts if students’ online personal information is accessed by an unauthorized user.

“These laws prevent unauthorized advertising of student profiles and keeps advertisers from selling it to someone else,” Williams said. “These new laws will be able to protect students well.”

According to MBUSD Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews, in order to comply with the new laws, MBUSD will continue with its own security policies and remain consistent with Assembly Bill 1584 and Senate Bill 1177, enacted on Jan. 1.

“What I like about the new security laws is that we now have the power of the law behind us in order to make sure that we are diligent in our security measures,” Matthews said.
