Mira Costa’s Associated Student Body will host its annual Winter Formal dance for Costa students at Los Verdes Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes tomorrow at 7:30 pm.

ASB decided to change the venue from a yacht to Los Verdes Golf Course after students complained about some of the setbacks of having the dance on a yacht. According to commissioner of entertainment, sophomore Morgan Kelley, some students complained about the fear of getting sea sick and others disliked being stuck on the boat the entire night.

“The thing that stood out about the venue was that it looks out over a golf course and is really pretty,” Kelley said. “The room that students will be dancing in is super spread out and gives everyone a good amount of room, which makes it the perfect location for formal.”

According to commissioner of entertainment, Kristin Reed, when looking for the new venue ASB wanted to try and keep the event more local and easier to get to than the yacht which it had been on for the past 3 years.

“I’m looking forward to the beautiful view of the country club,” junior Jenessa Gonzalez said. “I think it’s great that ASB has decided to change the setting of Winter Formal.”

The theme for this year’s Winter Formal is winter ball. According to co-commissioner of entertainment, junior Nickole Garlitos, and Kelley, the venue will be decorated by a company hired by ASB to correspond with the Winter Ball theme. The venue plans to be decorated with snowflakes.

“In the past the themes have been really cheesy, like drop it like it’s yacht,” said Garlitos. “We wanted something classy like something people see in the movies.”

The only activities planned for Winter Formal are dancing and a disc jockey. According to Claypoole, these are the only activities planned because fewer people attend Winter Formal than Prom which causes for a lower budget for this dance.

“For right now we don’t have anything special planned,” Claypoole said. “But as we get closer to the date we can consider adding things if we have more money.”
