Mira Costa Dance Team competed in two regional competitions hosted by Sharp International on March 7 and March 15, and is preparing for an upcoming national competition in Las Vegas on April 16-18.

At the March 7 competition at Arcadia High School the team competed against ten other high schools from the surrounding area.

The team got third place with their jazz routine to the club remix of the song “Let Me Think About It” by Olga Navratilova and won the overall lyrical division with their dance to the song “Silence” by Selena Cross. Dance Team also won the Best Showmanship Award.

“I love competition season because it is the last thing we do as a team each year, and it’s a great way for us to improve our dance skills and showcase our abilities,” senior captain Quinn Gardner said.

Gardner placed first with her solo performance in the lyrical division, senior captain Anais Checa placed fourth for her solo in the open division, and junior captain Sam Lonergan placed second for her jazz solo. Additionally, Checa, Gardner, and Lonergan placed first with their hip hop trio.

“We’re winning more than we ever have in the past four years I’ve been a part of dance team,” Gardner said. “Last year at nationals was the first time we won big, but this year we’ve been winning big at every competition.”

Dance Team competed in another regional competition on March 15 at Sierra Vista High School.
At the competition, Lonergan placed first with her solo again and Gardner also placed first with her lyrical solo. The team jazz and lyrical routines placed first and they won the entire lyrical division again.

“We continued to strengthen our dances through technique, performance, and precision in hopes that we would do even better at this next competition,” Dance Team coach Victoria Brown said.

Dance Team is currently preparing for the Sharp International Nationals in Las Vegas on April 16-18. They have attended this competition multiple times and placed first in the jazz division last year.

“I’m very excited for Nationals coming up,” Brown said “There will be amazing teams from all over attending this competition and we’re excited to show what we’ve got.”
