Grades of Green, Ecology Club and Costa’s Associated Student Body held an unveiling for a new dual trash and recycling bin system on April 16, which also served as a one-year celebration since Grades of Green began its recycling program at Costa.

Four Manhattan Beach mothers founded Grades of Green, an eco-friendly organization, in 2010, and have instituted over 100 programs across schools in the United States.

The event took place in the Mustang Mall during lunch, where Grades of Green members advertised the installation of 10 receptacles in the quad and five in the various athletic areas of campus, such as the gym.

“We encourage students to use the containers as often as possible,” Grades of Green programs and outreach manager Allie Bussjaeger said. “The net effect of successful usage could mean a better global environment for the future.”

The ultimate goal for Grades of Green’s Costa program is to create a completely trash-free lunch.

“The percentage of students who recycle has skyrocketed thanks to the many different waste receptacles we’ve placed around campus,” Grades of Green founder and director of communications Kim Martin said. “The landfill and recycle choice has been particularly effective, now that we’ve clearly showed what trash should go into what bin.”

Grades of Green plans to continue working with Costa and instituting new eco-conscious measures as it sees fit. It wishes to continue to work with the various individual “green”-centric clubs, such as the Ecology Club.

“We are so excited to see how successful our recycling program has become in the past year,” Grades of Green programs manager Jan Dunbar said. “The new trash can and recycling pairs we’ve placed around campus should boost the eco-friendly environment we’ve created.”
