In the last week of the regular season play, the Mira Costa baseball team rematched Redondo in the Bay League championship game on Friday. The Mustangs were able to win the game by a score of 6-3 and finish the season off as Bay League champions, holding an overall record of 23-7.

After coming off of an away game against Redondo where the Mustangs Miraculously came together and beat the Seahawks 5-, the boys came ready to play. Mira Costa needed to win the game in order to claim League champions, which proved to be easily accomplished for the Mustangs who now hold a nine game winning streak.

“The record is great and everything but what truly matters is what our team was able to accomplish this season,” junior pitcher Trevor Franklin said. “To beat the highly talented Redondo team is certainly something to acknowledge.”

During the first three innings, no runs were recorded due to the the face pace pitching and defense of both teams. At this point, it seemed as if it was going to be a close game between the two rival teams.

“Redondo is really a talented team and it just feels incredible to win,” junior pitcher Brett Davis said. “We really played well in both games and were able to work together as a team.”

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Mustangs went on a scoring frenzy and hit four runs. Junior second baseman Will Proctor, junior centerfielder Reese Alexiades, Davis and senior designated hitter Adam Reinhart all scored.

“Nothing is more exciting than sweeping our rival,” Proctor said. “We won as a team and what better day to do it than senior day in front of hundreds of fans.”

In the fifth inning of the game, Proctor was able to hit a two run home run over the left field, which changed the score to 6-0. In the final two innings of the game, the Seahawks recorded three runs, however they were not able to catch up with the Mustangs.

“The home run was great and I was happy I was able to contribute to the win but what really matters is we played as a team,” Proctor said. “Everyone was playing well and Franklin was pitching great just like he has been all year.”

Pitching for the Mustangs was Franklin, who was able to break a new school record and receive his 11th win. Franklin threw 64 strikes out of the 98 pitches he threw. Also pitching for the Mustangs during the games final inning was freshman Jesse Storey.

“We have worked extremely hard all year and just to have it pay off on Friday with a Bay League championship at home is incredible,” Franklin said. “We were able to share this day with all our fans and family and it is a memory that will last a lifetime.”

The Mustangs will move into California Interscholastic Federation Tournament division three games where they have a by in the first round, but will play on Thursday against a team which has not yet been determined. The Mustangs hope to finish off their postseason in a positive manner by doing well in CIF.

“We are not done yet,” Franklin said “ We are still looking to get a win this Thursday and keep our momentum strong as we move into CIF.”
