The Mira Costa Choir Department hosted their 14th annual spring concert in the auditorium on June 8 to display their singing abilities.

The concert was called “The Sound of Music” in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the musical. The concert consisted of four choirs, The Advanced Women’s Chorale, Multicultural Choir, Concert Choir, and the Vocal Ensemble. It also featured two a cappella groups, Coterie and Mira Costa Muscle.

“This concert was a wonderful experience for the singers and the audience,” choir teacher Michael Hayden said. “Our program is eclectic and very entertaining, and the choirs have worked very hard and are very prepared for this concert and will perform very well.”

The choirs have been practicing their songs for the whole spring semester, and rehearsed on Thursday, June 4 and Friday, June 5. They have also done many different exercises to increase their range, such as snorting or lip trilling.

“We learn so many styles of music, and we do a big range of exercises that surprisingly accomplish a lot,” senior Malia Elson said.

The concert started at seven p.m. and each choir sang a few songs from “The Sound of Music” musical. Additionally, each of the choirs presented their songs that they have been practicing over the spring, including “Vivaldi’s Gloria” and “Flying with Disney”.

“I really just loved all the music being performed and I love all the people who I got to perform with,” Elson said. “The choir department is just overall so amazing and we have so many seniors leaving this year it was definitely a very emotional concert.”

The choir also hosted a silent auction with six different prizes that Mira Costa choir families donated. Some of these events were a day of sailing, a home cooked Indian dinner, and concert at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The auction raised $1200 and the money will be used for the department’s future projects.

“The silent auction was incredibly successful, especially considering we only had a few items being auctioned off,” Elson said. “Our community, especially our parents, are so generous are we are so lucky to have raised as much money as we did.”

At the end of the concert, 40 graduating seniors were each presented a card by Mr. Hayden with their their picture and the theme of the concert on it. The senior’s photos were projected onto the large wall in the auditorium as they were presented the cards.

“It’s really felt like a home for me these past 4 years, and it’s going to be so strange going to their concerts in future years and not being on stage with everyone,” Elson said. “Everyone has made these years in choir unforgettable, it’s going to be really hard not having that next year.”
