In the first round of California Interscholastic Federation, Costa softball took on Laguna Hills High School in a home game on May 21. The game ended with a loss for Costa, 9-4.

The Mustangs fell behind by one run early on beause of their poor fielding. The Mustangs struggled to make plays, and there were many late throws on the field.

“We let them jump on us early and get ahead,” sophomore pitcher and designated hitter Elliott Estes said. “Our effort wasn’t good enough to start out the game.”

Despite their rough start on the field, Costa’s players had solid hitting and were abe to score four runs in the seventh inning, tyng the game at 4-4 and sending the Mustangs into an extra inning.

“We were behind, but we were able to keep our spirits up,” senior captain Liz Lewis said. “It allowed us to get back in it and tie it up, but when we needed to play at the top of our game, we couldn’t come through.”

In the top of the eighth, the Mustangs were unable to score, and in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Mustangs made several fielding errors which allowed Laguna Hills runners to get on base and eventually score multiple runs.

“We made a few errors, and the other team had an aggressive mindset, which eventually led to them scoring a couple runs,” Estes said, “If we hadn’t given up those runs, the game would have been a lot different.”

During the season, the Mustangs had an overall record of 20-9 and a Bay League record of 8-2. However, the Mustangs’ run in CIF came to an end after one game.

“The team remained united through the whole year, which was the key to our success,” Lewis said.
