At Mira Costa, academics are always highly regarded. However, two Costa students have taken their academic endeavors to the other side of the country. From July 19th to the 25th, Sophomore Daly Raffety, and her sister, freshman Lily Raffety will be attending Cornell University for a summer science program.

Cornell University is in Ithaca, New York and the Raffety sisters will be attending the School’s summer program for the second year in a row. Going to Cornell was no coincidence as the school has been a large part of the Raffety family for years.

“We picked Cornell because most of my dad’s side has gone there, so we have a legacy,” Daly Raffety said. I learned about this program two years ago when my uncle brought it up because he’s a professor at Cornell and he had heard about it.”

This time around, the girls are attending camp similar to the one they attended last year, but based on a different scientific field. According to the Raffetys Cornell offers a prestigious science school and is in the top schools in the country for their programs.

“We are going to take veterinary classes and last year we went for a science class where we learned biology, chemistry, and psychology,” Daly Raffety said.

Since she was young, Lily Raffety has been intrigued by various sciences. She plans the develop a future in the scientific field and hopes to be able to continue her life long dream of being a scientist. Lily Raffety says she would be honored to be able to attend a school like Cornell in order to fulfill her dreams.

“I’ve always been interested in science, especially psychology and veterinary sciences. I’m looking to possibly major in psychology or criminal/forensic psychology in college,” Lilly Raffety said.

“Last year we did labs, and Cornell professors gave us lectures,” Lilly Raffety said. “Graduate students also taught us with lectures, videos, worksheets, and collaborative activities.”

Intrigued with animals and being able to work to help them, Lilly is excited to be able to work with animals such as fistulated cows, and with two years left of high school, Daly is eager to go to college and study the fields she is interested in.

“This year I’m expecting to learn more about being a vet and animal studies to see if that’s something I’d want to do,” Daly Raffety said.

The girls are not only going to Cornell to learn more about the sciences, but they are also going to have a college experience. The Raffetys are excited to be able to tour the campus and get a taste of the college atmosphere.

“My favorite part from last year was getting to learn about what it’s like to live on campus at Cornell,” Daly Raffety said. “A few hours of the day were left for swimming in gorges, getting ice cream, and exploring Ithaca.
