Mira Costa’s Associated Student Body is preparing for Homecoming week this upcoming week, which will include week-long activities and will conclude with the crowning of this year’s Homecoming King and Queen.

Homecoming Court princesses are Kit Chavers, Molly Dvorkin, Nickole Garlitos, Rachel Kay, Danielle Major, Pooja Nagpal, Maddy Silver and Hanna Watkins. Homecoming princes are Shubhayu Bhattacharyay, Cole Keefer, Tyler Knudson, Sam Sturges, Callum Schelly, Kevin Vartan, Declan Wright, and Zack Zeoli.

During Homecoming week, Court members will participate in activities and themed costume days. Homecoming King and Queen will be announced at this Friday’s football game, and the Homecoming dance is next Saturday.

“Homecoming week is so much fun to observe,” ASB member and sophomore Sarah Childs said. “Homecoming Court members always love dressing up and it is a week with lots of school spirit.”

Various clubs and organizations nominated seniors for Homecoming Court. Up to four members per club or organization could be elected depending on its size. Costa juniors and seniors voted on Oct. 2 for Court members during lunch, or before or after school.

“I am honored to be on Homecoming Court with such wonderful people,” Court member Rachel Kay said. There are so many exciting activities planned for the week and I know the people voted on will have such a fun time together.”

When classes were supposed to vote for Homecoming Court on Oct. 1 many classes did not participate. This called for a recount of votes on Oct. 3 that created a second pool of nominees with the most votes. Since there were two days of voting, the top candidates from both votes were chosen resulting in eight Homecoming Court couples rather than six.

“None of the Homecoming Court activities will be altered because of the eight couples so it makes no difference in terms of Homecoming week,” ASB advisor Lisa Claypoole said. “The way I see it is that four more kids get to be happy and be involved with Homecoming.”

At the Homecoming pep rally this Wednesday planned by ASB, Court members will debut the annual self choreographed dance. Princesses will be dressed in football attire and princes will be dressed in cheerleading uniforms.

“With all the fun activities ASB has planned, it should be a week of lots of laughs and lots of spirit,” Watkins said. “I can’t wait.”

Homecoming King and Queen will be announced at this Friday’s football game against Inglewood. During halftime, following a short video featuring all the court members. Costa’s varsity football team will be playing against Inglewood.

“The Homecoming game is one of my favorites because there is such a large turnout for the crowd,” varsity football player and junior Jemal Williams said. “The announcement of Homecoming King and Queen attracts a lot of students.”

The annual Homecoming dance will take place at Mira Costa in Fisher Gym next Saturday. The dance will be from 7:30-11:30 pm and the theme is dancing through the decades.

“The Saturday after the game is the Homecoming Dance, which ASB plans, decorates, and runs,” Watkins said. “At the dance the homecoming court will perform their dance one final time as an end to a great week.”
