Mira Costa club, Lunches With Love, is providing Skid Row residents with lunches every Sunday to mitigate the Sept. 22 Los Angeles official state of emergency.

Lunches With Love President Kelly Sidney said that the club is currently making anywhere from 50-200 lunches every Saturday for the homeless residents along Skid Row. According to Los Angeles Police Department officer Deon Joseph, poverty, hunger, and crime are the most prominent issues leading to the decline of Skid Row.

“Hunger on skid row is an apparent problem but most homeless peoples have the opportunity to get food and shelter at a mission,” Sidney said. “Being hungry is in the hands of the homeless, they do have resources. I do believe Lunches With Love helps the problem.”

Other groups also make enough lunches so that anywhere from 200-1000 lunches are separately delivered.

“People respond very positively and are grateful for the lunches,” Sidney said. “Many people just make the lunches and drop them off at Super Sports for us to deliver which is great but it’s much more meaningful to personally hand them out and get to experience it.”

To help further combat homelessness, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti set forth a plan to help combat homelessness in Skid Row. The plan consists of an extra $100 million dollars in funding. It has not been specified where exactly this money will be going. Lunches With Love is also helping this cause with their weekly lunch contribution

“I believe that the club should continue as it is and encourage others to participate too,” Sidney said. “The more people who contribute to the cause, the less of a problem hunger on skid row will be. The situation is bigger than anything I could fix alone but with the attention Skid Row is getting at the moment, I believe resources and funds will begin to be focused towards the cause.’’
