The seventh annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk took place on Oct. 25 at the Manhattan Beach Pier and raised approximately $1.4 million to support the Friendship Circle of the South Bay, along with local schools including the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation.

More than 12,000 walkers gathered at the Manhattan Beach Pier to raise money for Friendship Circle, a nonprofit organization that raises awareness for kids and young adults with learning and physical disabilities. The walk generated funds through registration fees and donations.

“I think it’s just a great event for the South Bay community to get together to raise awareness for the special needs community and to raise money for our special education programs as well as for the local schools in the South Bay,” special events and marketing manager of the South Bay Friendship Circle Brandon Hixenbaugh said.

To kick off the walk, the Los Angeles Clipper dance team performed. Celebrities such as actress Brooke Burke-Charvet from “Dancing with the Stars,” professional boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and fitness instructor Denise Austin made appearances to help support the cause. Participants could sign up on teams or as individuals and walked three and a half miles from the MB Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier.

“Families, friends, and businesses from all over the South Bay and beyond came together in support of the walk,” Skechers public relations manager Stacey Held said. “Without their help, none of this would have been possible. [The money raised will help to] reach more children with special needs and create more great programs for them, as well as provide even more much-needed funds for education.”
