The Mira Costa administration is experiencing a delay in receiving weighted grade point averages on students’ transcript, causing seniors to experience problems during the college application process.

The Manhattan Beach Unified School District approved the policy to weight grades on a 5.0 scale at its May 20 meeting, and it will go into effect in February 2016. The delay in weighting grades is due to PowerSchool restrictions and has caused Costa to hire a new company called Computer Logic Group to weigh the transcripts in order to accommodate seniors who are applying early to colleges.

“In order to create a functioning transcript, links to courses, course tables, grade scales, and much more must be done in PowerSchool first,” Costa Vice Principal Karina Gerger said. “Working with PowerSchool has proven to be challenging.”

Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale stated that the PowerSchool transferring process is taking longer than expected. Therefore, administrators have been finding alternatives in order to weigh transcripts.

This problem continues to affect the students applying for early scholarships from selective schools because they only allow the students’ weighted transcripts to be admitted. The weighted scale will be transferred to PowerSchool by February, which coincides with the release of first semester grades,” Gerger said.

“Students who need a weighted GPA for early scholarships may need to come to the office for a hand calculation if the college or university will not accept the weighted transcript in February,” Gerger said. “However, most institutions will accept the February weighted GPA.”
