Mira Costa won big at home against North Torrance High School with a final score of 35-14.

Costa started the game with an injury to Costa junior receiver Justin Goring after an attempt to tackle North’s quarterback Mique Juarez. The rest of the first quarter was uneventful with no touchdowns scored by either team.

The second quarter took a different pace than the first with a touchdown by North’s quarterback running 70 yards down the field beating out Costa’s defense. Costa came back and scored a touchdown with junior quarterback David Arredondo running the ball in from the one-yard line.

The third quarter started in North’s favor as they scored another touchdown with a run down the length of the field by their quarterback. As he scored he was injured in the play and Costa quickly came back and scored three touchdowns in the third quarter bring Costa up 28-7.

“Their quarterback is very athletic and they are relying on him in order to win which ultimately failed,” Arredondo said. “As soon as we were able to get passed him, the game went smoothly for us.”

Costa’s first touchdown occurred in the second quarter and came from senior running back Omar Morrison, scoring from within the then yard line to finish a long offensive drive. Their second of the quarter came from Costa’s defense forcing their quarterback to fumble the ball, which lead to a defensive touchdown for Costa.

Their final touchdown of the quarter was another short rush by Arredondo after a long offensive drive. Senior kicker Graham Lipps who made all but one of his points after touchdown attempts greatly supported Costa’s offense.

“This game was a team win,” Lipps said “All our guys played extremely well and were excited to see what lies ahead.”

In the fourth quarter Costa kept its lead with another touchdown by Arredondo from within the ten yard line. To finish the game North’s quarterback scored again with a quarterback sneak with his third touchdown of the night.

“Throughout the game, the offensive line opened up some big holes and blocked hard in order to let me score,” Arredondo said.

Costa ended the game 35-21 playing strongly throughout each quarter. In the next round of CIF playoffs Costa will play against Palos Verdes at San Pedro High-school.

“We are doing for the most part the same preparation for the game,” junior wide receiver Chris Brown said. “We haven’t made many changes, we just need to compete hard if we want to win.”
