Mira Costa girls soccer defeated Torrance 2-1 in a non-conference game at home on Wednesday. Costa’s solid defense and better ball possession shut out Torrance’s offense and led the Mustangs to victory.

Costa dominated Torrance with two goals from junior center midfielder Vivianna Villacorte and center forward Morgan McCarroll toward the end of the first half. In the second half, a hiccup in Costa’s defense allowed Torrance to score. According to Villacorte, the Mustangs had good chances and good ball control throughout the game.

“I was just happy that I could help the team have the better chance to win,” Villacorte said. “Torrance is always a tough team to play, and it’s a great start playing in our home field and getting a win.”

The Mustangs, remaining undefeated at 4-0 overall, will next play West Ranch on Saturday in the third round of the South Holiday tournament hosted by South Torrance High School. According to senior midfielder Kendall Douglas, the team has been working on a lot of different offensive plays in order to build a strong attack in preparation for the tournament.

“If we continue to play to our strengths and learn from our mistakes in our previous games, then we can get far in this tournament,” Douglas said. “Our team has a lot of potential, but I think our mentality is going to play a big role in how far we go.”
