Despite their countless shot attempts, the Mustangs could not trample the Tar Tars.

Mira Costa’s boys basketball team fell to Torrance High School, 50-43, in the game on Tuesday.

“We did a poor job defending, and we didn’t stick to our game plan,” senior point guard Johnny Mims said.

The first quarter started with Torrance taking a quick lead by making its long-range shooting.

“Our defense wasn’t where it should’ve been,” senior forward Quenton Jackson said. “They were simply outplaying us.”

The Mustangs made little progress in the second quarter. Costa’s defense had multiple stumbles, leading to a surge of points from Torrance’s offense. Torrance kept its lead, 28-14, going into the half.

“We were having a tough time getting into a rythmn against their zone,” sophomore guard Bobby Barkley said.

The second half opened up with a new sense of energy from Costa. At one point, Costa was within four points due to three-pointers from Barkley and Jackson. However, Costa couldn not come back, ending the third quarter 34-30.

“The momentum shifted toward us in the second half, but we were too far behind,” junior guard Ryan White said.

Torrance stayed ahead in the fourth quarter, not only in terms of the long-range shooting, but the post game as well, and defeated Costa.

“We just have to put this one behind us,” Barkley said.

Costa is 6-3 overall and will play at Chaminade today in a non conference game.

“We have to shoot, pass and defend better,” basketball coach Jeff Amaral said.
