Mira Costa’s girls water polo team defeated Peninsula 9-5 in a Bay League game on Monday at Peninsula High School, with top performances by seniors utility Kaylee Brownsberger and attacker Yen Nguyen.

The Mustangs started out strong and were trailing ahead in the first half. In the second half, Costa continued to play strong and furthered its lead with goals by Brownsberger and Nguyen. According to Nguyen, the team was cohesive and full of energy.

“We communicated really well as a team today and we functioned as a unit,” Nguyen said. “The game against Santa Monica was more of a warm up, and the team really shined in today’s game.”

The Mustangs are currently 3-0 in Bay League and 8-6 overall. The team will face off against Redondo Union High School in its next game on Wednesday at Mira Costa. According to Nguyen, the team is determined to play well in Wednesday’s match.

“Redondo is one of our biggest rivals so we are excited to play them,” Nguyen said. “Our defence has gotten much better and we hope to stay undefeated in Bay League.”
